| HOW
TO START THE KEROSENE ENGINE.
First. Turn the lever handle on the threeway cock until it points to the gasoline fuel pipe coining from the small tank, put gasoline in the small tank on the side of the cylinder and kerosene in the main tank in the base. Second. Put just enough water in the water reservoir to cover the cylinder about 1 inch. Third. Open the fuel valve on the mixer two full turns to the left, push up on the valve stem until the gasoline drips. Do not open the water valve when using gasoline, as water mixed with gasoline will make it hard to start the engine. Fourth. Turn on the oil by raising up lever on lubricator, be sure it is feeding properly. Fifth. Place the timing lever "J" (Figure 7) in the starting position to prevent the engine from kicking back. Sixth. Turn the wheels around to the right until the detent blade on the governor can be pushed in behind the catch block on the cam rod and hold it there. Seventh. Take hold of a spoke in the fly wheel and turn it around to the right rapidly five or six times and then release the detent blade but continue to turn the fly wheel until the engine starts. Eighth. Change the timing lever (Figure 7 to the running position and close the fuel valve until the point is reached where the engine runs with the least number of explosions and without black smoke appearing at the exhaust or a popping sound at the mixer. This popping sound is caused by an insufficient supply of fuel, and smoke at the exhaust by too much fuel. NOTE-For full particulars
regarding the method of starting with the Webster Magneto
and method of adjusting, see pages 12 to 15. USE ALL OF THE GASOLINE BEFORE
CHANGING TO After you have the - engine started on gasoline,
let it run a few minutes, then start on whatever, work you have to do and continue
using gasoline supply until the small tank is nearly all
used up, or until the water in the reservoir is boiling;
then change to kerosene. -29- |
